WORLD'S MOST LIVABLE CITY

One of our regular blog readers, Craig congratulated us being voted the WORLD'S MOST LIVABLE CITY. We sometimes take things for granted - we know how livable Melbourne is, especially in our "Home on the Bay" area. This doesn't stop us from admiring and experiencing other cities even if it is through our fellow bloggers.
How many of you out there have been to Melbourne and what were your experiences, good or bad? Let us know, leave a comment.

  1. Yes Leon and Sue - I have been to Melbourne on many occasions and last month was able to spend a few days staying in Little Collins St - right in the centre of your fine city - it was a real treat - the people - shopping - restaurants/foodie shops stc and the general infrastructure for getting around is fantastic. I realise living in a city is different to taking a short break - but I can understand how Melbourne
was awarded the most liveable city title! Well deserved!!

  2. Do you know that since my first visit to Adelaide in 1966, I've had a soft spot for it. It must be the lack of peak hour (1/2 hour more like it) traffic that appeals.
    Adelaide had great culture.

  3. I've been twice Leon and Sue, but way back in the early 90's (when I was dating an Australian). I'm sure that it's changed a lot since then but my strongest recollections of it were the feeling of cultural diversity, food, and the parks.

  4. Craig - I think in respect of your memories, it hasn't changed or maybe improved in that respect.
You would notice a difference architectually though. Melbourne has gone thru a process of reclaiming and beautifying many of its no so livable areas such as Docklands where such streets as Bourke and Collins now are probably are 1/3 longer. You must blog some of your Melbourne memories for your readers.

  5. I have only been to Australia 3 times but never to Melbourne. I am sure it is a delightful city. I only know it through you Leon and Sue. I watched an HGTV "house hunter international" last week. An American couple were buying a house in "Hampton" (if I remember right). They found a house for close to 1 million US $. Maybe that is an expensive area?

  6. Nadege - like most cities prices vary. Parts of Hampton are not so expensive. The price may have been a place close to the beach. We are just little further around the bay and our area would have several $M homes. We are around a km back from the beach and prices would be from $550k to $800k.
I've seen some houses with a price of $350k but then is the location where you want to be.
We are fortunate to have bought where we did way back.

  7. Never even been to Australia yet, let alone Melbourne, would you believe though that the beach huts remind me of Suffolk :)

  9. LLM - Put Melbourne on your "Bucket" list. In the meantime I'll try to bring you more of our fair city in future posts.
